Aston Villa find themselves in a difficult moment and the international break has come at the right time for everyone involved.

In three different competitions – the Premier League, EFL Cup and the Champions League

Ezri Konsa has been part of most of those defeats, sometimes playing at centre-back or right-back for Unai Emery.

On Saturday evening, Aston Villa were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield, and whilst the away side could have had two penalties, the defending was an issue once again.

The Pau Torres and Conor Bradley incident shouldn’t paper over the fact that the Midlands side have only kept one clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

For a side that is a Champions League club right now, that’s pretty unacceptable and rather worrying.

That’s why players like Konsa have come under stick for their performances.

Ezri Konsa says Aston Villa ‘working hard’ to get back to winning ways

Liverpool’s opening goal came via a swift counter – and it would become a theme in the game – with Darwin Nunez burying his chance and opening the scoring.

Then late in the second half, with Villa trying to push for an equaliser, Mohamed Salah was on his bike again and he sealed the points for his side.

Micheal Owen and Darren Bent were critical of Konsa’s defending for that goal, and that’s something the player isn’t used to because he is usually reliable from a defensive aspect.

But the player himself, as he earns another England call, was pretty bullish on Instagram as this international break comes at the right time for the team.

“A bad run of results,” said Konsa. “We are all working hard to get back to winning ways. Thank you for the support.”

Unai Emery needs to fix Konsa’s position

Many Aston Villa fans will tell you that Konsa is still the main guy at the back and the team’s best defender.

But if they want to get back to winning ways, then they need to sort his position out, rather than chopping and changing him to right-back, then centre-back, and vice versa.

Already this season in all competitions, Konsa has played nine games at centre-back and six at right-back.

It’s not helping anyone’s cause. Yes, Matty Cash’s injury doesn’t help matters because there isn’t a senior right-back to pick from, but Emery needs to stop chopping and changing the player.
