ALAN SHEARER SHARES HOW NEWCASTLE UNTIED BESTED CHELSEA IN THEIR EFL CLASH

Chelsea had a first half to forget in their Carabao Cup tie with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Chelsea played Newcastle United in the Premier League last weekend and took the lead in that game before eventually winning 2-1.
However, at St James’ Park, Enzo Maresca‘s men quickly found themselves 2-0 down. Alexander Isak put Newcastle in front before an own goal from Axel Disasi doubled their lead.
Chelsea are eyeing Isak ahead of the January transfer window, with the striker yet to sign a new contract.
Chelsea’s risk taking at the back

Newcastle’s first goal came from the Magpies applying pressure to Chelsea’s midfield and backline.
For Alan Shearer, the Blues took too many gambles at the back as they kept trying to play the ball out.
Commentating on the game for the BBC, the Newcastle legend said: “Just as I was saying that Chelsea were looking comfortable in possession and playing some nice football, on the edge of their box they take a gamble too much.
“Joelinton and Sandro Tonali read it really well to intercept and the ball falls kindly to Alexander Isak in the box. Doesn’t need to think about it, just slots it underneath the goalkeeper.”
Before the game former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes had praised Maresca for the impact he has made at Chelsea this season.

Chelsea’s worst half of the season

That was easily Chelsea’s worst half of the season and extremely disappointing, given that they were able to beat Newcastle not that long ago.
Of course, the team that Maresca put out was a much different one to the side that beat Eddie Howe’s men at Stamford Bridge.
The likes of Enzo Fernandez, Renato Veiga and Disasi all started and would have been hoping to impress Maresca in the first half ahead of that huge game against Manchester United on Sunday.
Ultimately, for now, Veiga, Disasi and the rest of Chelsea’s B team will remain Chelsea’s B team.
Fernandez is also at risk of becoming part of Chelsea’s second-string side. Chelsea actually have a higher win rate without Fernandez in their starting XI, worryingly for him.
Unless Maresca changes formation, you would expect him to start Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia in midfield against United on Sunday, while leaving Fernandez on the bench.
