Gary Neville believes West Ham United were “poor” despite beating Manchester United 2-1 on Sunday (27 October).
Jarrod Bowen secured three vital points for the Hammers at the London Stadium, scoring a 92nd-minute penalty after Casemiro cancelled out Crysencio Summerville’s opener in the second half.
Former Manchester United captain Neville slammed the Irons on The Gary Neville Podcast [27 October, 13m 31s] when asked what he made of the home side’s display.
Asked what he made of West Ham’s performance, he replied: “Poor”.
Neville added: “In the first half when I watched the game I thought they were really poor. I mean, West Ham have won the game so it’s a great day for them and the fans will be absolutely over the moon.
“But they’ve hung in there. [The fans] thrive on the idea of Manchester United missing chances. It gives you more encouragement in the stadium. It gives you more encouragement on the pitch if you’re a West Ham player, but I thought they were poor in the first half.“I don’t think I’m sitting here thinking West Ham dominated [Man] United today. Neville is hardly known for maintaining a level head when discussing Manchester United and his comments on the Hammers come across as bitter in the face of defeat.
The Sky Sports pundit cited his former side’s missed chances in the first half as the deciding factor at the London Stadium. Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot spurned golden chances to give the visitors the lead.
While that may be true, nothing can be taken from the Hammers finding a way, against all the odds to get the three points on the day, and they now sit seven points clear of the drop zone after initial fears the side could be drawn into a relegation battle this season.
It is not how you win but that you win, and Bowen stepped up for his side when he was needed most and delivered a monumental victory for Julen Lopetegui.
The Spaniard has saved himself more time with the victory to work on piecing together the jigsaw at West Ham and find the best starting eleven to lead his side forward in the coming weeks
