West Ham player ratings (4-3-3)
GK: Lukasz Fabianski – 5/10 – Was not exactly to blame for the goals he conceded but that a couple were from long range will irk him.
RB: Vladimir Coufal – 5/10 – Dealt fairly well with Gakpo up until the late stages and was regularly involved in West Ham’s good counterattacking moments.
CB: Max Kilman – 5/10 – Somehow beaten to a header by the diminutive Jota for the equaliser and later missed a brilliant chance to level things with a heavy touch in the Liverpool box.
CB: Jean-Clair Todibo – 6/10 – Looked quite strong in his individual battles and almost opened the scoring with a diving header at the Kop end.
LB: Aaron Cresswell – 6/10 – Put in some decent crosses but Liverpool had plenty of joy down his side of the pitch.
DM: Tomas Soucek – 5/10 – Did not do enough to protect West Ham’s defence and was ineffective in possession.
DM: Edson Alvarez – 3/10 – Given the run around in midfield all evening before earning a second yellow card for a needless dive in on Salah.
AM: Carlos Soler – 7/10 – Won his battles in the middle and got a couple of dangerous shots away after getting up to support the attack. A solid performance.
RW: Jarrod Bowen – 7/10 – Gave Liverpool plenty of problems and helped West Ham up the pitch on numerous occasions, particularly during their late push to salvage the tie.
CF: Danny Ings – 5/10 – After scoring an offside goal early doors, he could not influence the game.
LW: Crysencio Summerville – 7/10 – Looked like West Ham’s most dangerous player when he got the ball but did not see it enough.

The ever-popular former Liverpool defender made a self-depreciating joke about his personal own goal record from his playing days while on commentary duty for Sky Sports.
Jamie Carragher has joked that Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah will be doing well if he just scores an own goal every 100 appearances, making reference to his personal own-goal ratio with the Reds! The defender could count himself unfortunate to have his name on the wrong scoresheet in Wednesday’s League Cup clash with West Ham.
A defensive muddle saw Wataru Endo smack the ball against Quansah, who knew little about it, as the Hammers went ahead on 21 minutes. It’s the first own goal of Quansah’s senior career.
Carragher, 46, himself put a number through his own net during his playing days, including one in the 2006 FA Cup final against, incidentally, West Ham. The former defender, who played 737 times for the Reds, scored at the wrong end seven times across his career – but that does little to diminish his ever-strong reputation.
Shortly after Quansah’s own goal, Sky Sports commentator Seb Hutchinson, referencing Carragher’s own famous own foal record, remarked: “In your career, you are going to score an own goal or two aren’t you?”
Liverpool great Carragher laughed and soon responded: “Yeah, yeah, yeah! If he scores one every 100 games then he’s done well. That was my ratio.”
And at the start of the second half, once more referencing Quansah, the commentator said it was “hopefully his last” own goal. Carragher joked: “Oh no, it won’t be his last!”
Quansah was starting for the first time since Liverpool’s opening match of the season – where he was substituted at half-time in the 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. The 21-year-old, who since played 82 minutes for England Under-21s earlier this month, has totted-up 35 first-team matches overall for Liverpool’s senior side.
