Romero was arguably the Albiceleste’s best player in the Copa America in the summer, with the South American side’s success in the tournament being built on their water-tight defence.
The World champions picked up from where they left off, getting their qualifying campaign off to the perfect start by brushing Chile aside 3-0 in Buenos Aires on Thursday.
The Tottenham man delivered another solid display in the heart of Argentina’s back three, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Julian Alvarez and Paulo Dybala ensuring that the home side registered a comfortable win.
Cristian Romero – the best in the world
Romero has received plenty of plaudits for his display against the Chileans, with TyC Sports gushing about the Tottenham man and suggesting that he is the best central defender in the world.
The publication wrote about the 26-year-old: “He’s a beast. He doesn’t lose one duel. There is no better centre-back in the world than Cuti these days.”
Romero and Argentina will now travel to Colombia for a tough away game on Tuesday.
