James Maddison has been called out for his actions during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday at St James’ Park.

Ange Postecoglou went into the game knowing that his team had to overcome the nightmare of getting torn apart in this fixture for the past two seasons.

It was a lively start with Harvey Barnes opening the scoring for Newcastle, but from then on, Tottenham were by far the better team and they equalised in the second half when Dan Burn fired into his own net.

Spurs pushed and pushed for a goal, including Maddison forcing Nick Pope into a strong save, before Alexander Isak scored the winner.

After the game, a lot of talk was about Tottenham wasting big chances again, but Chris Sutton was keen to call out Maddison.

The England international can be a marmite-like figure because of his style of play and how he can go to ground pretty easily.

Sutton named Maddison as ‘the winner of this week’s simulation game’ after he accused him of diving during his side’s defeat to Newcastle.

The former striker stated that the former Leicester City player ‘has a history of this’ and ‘you are better than that’, as he told BBC’s 606.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom from Sutton because he did state that the Tottenham playmaker is a ‘great footballer’ and should know better.

Spurs controlled the game for large parts, created chances and also levelled matters after the break, but failed to kill the game. This came back to haunt them eventually, leaving Ange Postecoglou and the fans exasperated at the full-time whistle at St James’ Park.

Lucas Bergvall is among many Spurs players set to travel for the international duty. Now that the teenager has received his call-up to the Swedish national team, his compatriot and Spurs teammate Dejan Kulusevski has expressed his happiness and spoken about his quality.

When it was put out to him that Lucas Bergvall got the call-up to the national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, Kulusevski told Football London:

“Yeah absolutely. He has been fantastic. He has come in and he’s doing really good every day, training hard and learning from the other players. I’m happy for him and I’m happy that I can bring him to the national team with me.”

Tottenham acquired Bergvall’s services in an 8.5m deal, with additional add-ons from Djurgardens at the start of February, beating competition from clubs such as Aston Villa, Wolves and Barcelona. The teenager officially joined the North London club in July, and he has been impressing his teammates, Big Ange and his coaching staff since linking up in pre-season.
