Here we take a look at two further transfer deals Tottenham must finalise before the 11pm summer deadline on Friday, August 30 We are about to enter the final week of the summer transfer window and Tottenham still have moves to make in the market. A very busy summer at the club so far with incomings and outgoings taking place in order to refresh Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs squad, a few more deals could be sanctioned before the month is out.
The loan market is once again going to be really important to the Lilywhites when it comes to allowing those on the periphery of the team to head elsewhere and feature regularly. Tottenham have so far finalised a number of loan deals for the 2024/25 campaign, with Matthew Craig (Barnsley), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Marseille), Bryan Gil (Girona), Alejo Veliz (Espanyol), Dane Scarlett (Oxford United) and Jamie Donley (Leyton Orient) all departing Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the season. Donley made an instant impression for Orient on his debut for the club at Charlton Athletic last weekend and his move across the capital is only going to benefit him as he now has the opportunity to play regularly in senior football. Veliz and Scarlett could also thrive if they are given consistent minutes to show what they can do, which unfortunately wasn’t the case for them at Sevilla and Ipswich Town respectively last term Before the 11pm transfer deadline on Friday, August 30, Johan Lange and Tottenham have two further loan moves that must be a priority for the club in the remaining days of the summer transfer window. The two players in question are Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine.
Rated extremely highly by the club, both are going to find opportunities in the first team extremely hard to come by due to the size of Postecoglou’s squad. Loan moves benefit all parties concerned, thus giving the duo the opportunity to build on finishing last season on loan with Plymouth Argyle in the Championship.
Devine did start the 2023/24 term with League One side Port Vale but it was decided by Spurs that they wanted to test him at a higher level in the second half of the campaign going on the performances he was producing on a weekly basis for the Staffordshire-based club. His time at Home Park certainly wasn’t as successful as his spell with Vale due to a lack of regular minutes, but the experience of playing senior football only enhanced his game and that was evident over the course of pre-season. Catching Postecoglou’s eye 12 months ago in the head coach’s first few weeks as Tottenham boss, Devine again did likewise this time around and it has led to many supporters calling for him to be given a shot in the first team this term. Speaking ahead of the Bayern Munich friendly at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month, Postecoglou was asked by football.london what this season holds for Devine and whether he will stay or depart on loan once again.
“We’ll have a look at it really closely. I agree, Alfie has had a really good pre-season and again compare it to last year and he’s definitely developed,” he said. “Part of that is probably because he’s played senior football last year on loan. A lot of them will be judged with what outs we have between now and the start of the season.
“I wouldn’t want to keep him with us unless I really felt he can get some significant game time because I don’t want to startle his development because he is a player that can make an impact here at Spurs. Fair to say him and the other younger guys, Jamie Donley, Will Lankshear have made an impression both in the way they have trained and the way they have played games. We’ll have a close look at what the next steps are.” If he is to depart on loan over the course of the next week, the Championship looks the most likely destination for the 20-year-old. Having gone from starting the vast majority of his games for Port Vale, Devine started nine of his 15 Plymouth appearances and on three occasions he didn’t even make it off the substitutes’ bench.
Devine’s first spell in the Championship will only have benefitted him and another shot at England’s second division could be the making of him as he bids to become a Tottenham regular in the not too distant future. You could make a case for keeping the Warrington-born player at the club this season due to the addition of Europa League football on the calendar but regular football and a loan move away is what he needs right now.
Phillips would also benefit from a full year out on loan as he currently finds himself behind Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin in the pecking order at Tottenham. Due to Ben Davies’ versatility, the Welshman may even be ahead of Phillips if there is a scenario just like last season where there is lack of available centre-backs Speaking towards the end of last season, Postecoglou revealed that he is looking to add another centre-back to his squad for 2024/25. Tottenham have yet to bring in a new defender and they cannot leave themselves too short in that area of the pitch, especially with eight Europa League games on the calendar before the end of January and with also Carabao Cup football to come in the first half of the term. As is the case with Devine, though, Phillips requires another loan spell in the Championship just to add to his experience in the senior game. Coming up against attacking players such as Dominic Solanke, James Maddison and Son Heung-min on a daily basis in training is undoubtedly good for his development, but it is the matchday experience he requires to help take his game to another level.
Spurs fans got to see glimpses of the ex-Blackburn Rovers man in pre-season as he played the second half of the Hearts, QPR and Vissel Kobe games, with a knock on the training ground keeping him out of the team’s final three friendlies of the summer. Phillips has since returned to training but it’s hard to see where exactly he is going to get his minutes from unless he heads out on loan. As Lange and Postecoglou plan for the years ahead, it is vital that both Devine and Phillips get their loan moves to ensure they are in the best position possible to become Spurs stars of the future.
