Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Tottenham are close to reaching a “priority” agreement to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis in future.
The reliable Italian journalist states that this prospective deal is part of a move which will see Giovani Lo Celso return to Real Betis.
Romano adds that Tottenham will also “buy a percentage” of any cash Real Betis receive from selling Cardoso to another club in future – in case Spurs decide against signing the United States international later down the line.
The 22-year-old, who is a defensive midfielder, made 17 appearances in La Liga for Real Betis last season, scoring one goal while also providing two assists.
Cardoso has also won 15 caps for the United States, with The Athletic describing the man from Denville as a “rare combination of physicality, intelligence and grace” – remarkably, he only started to play as a defensive midfielder in his late teenage years.

Tottenham Hotspur have been busy on the transfer front for most of the summer, and they haven’t slowed down on deadline day either.

Johnny Cardoso could be bound for the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly agreeing a transfer fee with Real Betis for the U.S. national team midfielder. “There can’t be a desperation to win a trophy because it cures all ills – it doesn’t. As soon as you win one, what do you think the fans are going to say? ‘It’s OK … you don’t have to win one for another 15 or 16 years?’ No. They’ll want more.
“I am determined to bring success to the club but it is not a desperation for something that will give us some respite for what is ahead. When you’re a big club there should be a constant demand for success.”
Asked if he pictured himself lifting trophies at Spurs, Postecoglou, who has won titles in Japan, Scotland and Australia, quipped: “I’ve got real pictures. Quite a few. I just look at the ones I have got.
Winning is what drives me. I start every year hoping there is a picture by the end of it of me with a team lifting a trophy.”
