Tottenham Hotspur have made a decision regarding Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future.
Sources: hojberg wants to quit Tottenham after contract talks collapse
It is believed talks over a new contract have collapsed – with the 30-year-old’s current deal set to come to an end when the 2023-24 campaign concludes.
Hojberg has not had a much minute of action so far this season and has failed to even make the matchday squad for more than half of their games this term.
Tottenham would be keen to listen to offers for the former England international in January as they look to clear the decks under Ange Postecoglou.
Recent reports indicate that the Danish player, who has been linked with a potential move away from Hotspur Way, is likely to leave the club.
According to Tottenham News, Spurs do not plan to offer Højbjerg a new contract. The 28-year-old midfielder has 18 months remaining on his current contract, which is set to expire in June 2025.
Hojbjerg, primarily functioning as a defensive midfielder, has seen reduced playing time under Postecoglou, starting in only 5 out of 20 league matches and often coming on as a substitute.
Signed by Tottenham from Southampton on a five-year deal in the summer of 2020, he played a key role under previous managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
However, with Postecoglou preferring other midfield options like Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, Højbjerg has found himself in a supporting role this season.
It is suggested that the player’s style does not suit Postecoglou’s preference for quick distribution in midfield.
Eager for regular playing time, Hojbjerg is reportedly looking to leave the North London club. He has reportedly even hired a new lawyer, who will act as his agent, to expedite the process.
Several clubs, including Juventus and Napoli, have shown interest in securing the midfielder’s services.
But Sky Sports recently reported that the Hojbjerg saga could be set to go down to the final days of the window, as Spurs are not willing to accept a cut-price deal for him.
However, as per Tottenham News, the club are still in a decent position with Hojbjerg, considering he still holds value to the club and could be sold for a reasonable sum in the summer if a transfer doesn’t materialise this month.
Hojbjerg has made a total of 167 appearances for Tottenham, contributing 10 goals and 16 assists during his time with the club.
