Jeff Stelling has shared what really worries him about Timo Werner’s proposed move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The legendary presenter has been discussing Tottenham’s move for the former Chelsea striker and raised concerns over his playing time at RB Leipzig this season.
Timo Werner is set to join Tottenham on an initial loan deal, with the North Londoners having the option to buy him over the summer.
It’s a move that came out of nowhere over the weekend as many expected Spurs to wrap up a deal for a new centre-back before anything else.
Yet, Ange Postecoglou was reportedly keen to snap up Werner as he bids to bolster his forward line, with Heung-Min Son currently away on international duty at the Asian Cup.
The move for Werner has certainly divided opinion, with the likes of Jamie O’Hara labelling it a smart piece of business while Gabriel Agbonlahor is unconvinced.
Now, Jeff Stelling has offered his opinion on Werner’s proposed switch to Spurs and feels the North Londoners should have concerns over his lack of starts at Leipzig this term.
Stelling on what worries him about Werner to Tottenham
Speaking on talkSPORT, Stelling raised concerns over Tottenham’s move for Werner.
“He’s scored twice in Germany this season,” the presenter said. “In actual fact, the thing that would concern me is that he’s only started twice this season for RB Leipzig. He’s a sub basically, most of the time.
“Is he what Spurs need? Could he do a job for Spurs?”
“That’s the most important thing – I think there’s a better chance of him doing a job for Spurs,” Ally McCoist responded. “Listen, his stats will tell you he’s not going to get the goals that Son gets.
“The best thing that could happen for Spurs is Son gets back as quickly as possible. Clearly, you can understand what they’re trying to do. Richarlison plays through the middle and they need somebody to play the position Son’s vacating due to international duties.
“Listen, Werner’s one of these guys who will work his side, he won’t lack in effort, he’s still pacey. He’s certainly not going to get you the goals Son gets you, I don’t think. He might prove me wrong.
“Stop-gap? Yeah. He’ll come with something to prove and he’ll give you everything he’s got. No way is he a full-time replacement for Son but I see what they’re trying to do.”
He added: “His goalscoring record is poor, it really is. And even since he’s gone back to Germany, it’s been very much the same. I’d like to do him more justice than he’ll fill a jersey. He’ll play that left-hand side and he’ll chip in with the odd goal.”
Werner has managed just eight appearances in the Bundesliga this season, netting twice in the process.
The 27-year-old has made an extra six appearances in all competitions, starting six times.
His lack of game time may be a slight concern for Spurs as he’s hardly been a regular starter for Leipzig this season.
But the German will hardly be lacking match sharpness as he’s still featured fairly regularly from the bench, while making a handful of starts.
Postecoglou will certainly be hopeful that Werner gets up to speed quickly at Tottenham, especially during a spell where they will be without their talisman Son.
