John Wenham insists Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero will fail to learn from his “careless” mistakes after his challenge on Callum Wilson during the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.
Ange Postecoglou’s side got back to winning ways on Sunday 10 December with an emphatic performance against top-four rivals Newcastle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, what proved to be more or less a perfect afternoon in north London could have been tainted late on, with Romero perhaps lucky to escape a red card for a late challenge on Wilson during the closing stages of the match, a challenge which has drawn widespread criticism in the days since.
Having just returned from a three-match suspension following his red card against Chelsea last month, Wenham has detailed his frustration at what Romero did.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I know a lot of people have got the view that because he didn’t get sent off, it’s fine, but that’s just not on. He was very close to getting sent off and that would have been a four-game suspension.
It was just madness, when you’re winning 3-0 that late in the game to go in and make that sort of challenge and risk the longer-term impact that it would have had on us as a team moving forward was just so careless.
“Considering that he had just sat out for three games and saw the number of points we dropped while he was out, to do that again shows that he won’t learn from his previous mistakes.
“I still think he’s the best centre-back that we’ve got and probably in the top three to four centre-backs in the Premier League, and as a result I think we just have to live with this because of how good he is and how important he is for the team.
