Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola knew that Ange Postecoglou was a top manager four years before he pitched up at Tottenham Hotspur and made an instant impact on the Premier League.

The 58-year-old Spurs boss earned his stripes as a coach in Australia, working for 21 years Down Under before becoming manager of Japanese outfit Yokohama F. Marinos in December 2017.

It was just over 18 months later that Guardiola and Postecoglou came face to face at a friendly game between the Marinos and Manchester City at the 65,000-seater Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.

The Premier League giants went 1-0 up in the game thanks to a strike from Kevin De Bruyne only for the home side to level through Keita Endo five minutes later, frustrating their elite opposition who were met with a sterner challenge than anticipated.
Raheem Sterling and Lukas Nmecha managed to see City to a 3-1 victory in the end, but Guardiola certainly has not forgotten how difficult Postecoglou’s side made it for him back in Japan, referencing the game ahead of Sunday’s meeting between City and Spurs at the Etihad.

“We know Ange Postecoglou well from his time with our friends in Yokohama – the team he built there was exceptional,” said the City boss in his programme notes. “We played them in 2019 and wow…what a game that was. I had no doubts after that night in Japan he was a top manager. It will be a pleasure to see him again.”
