It has been claimed that Manchester City are keen on a transfer for both Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol due to their elite mentalities.
Journalist Dean Jones made this revelation to GiveMeSport, as Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday that the move for the former worth an initial £25 million was all but official.
It seems like Manchester City have been particularly intrigued by how mentally tough both Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol have proven to be.
Manchester City targeting Mateo Kovacic & Josko Gvardiol due to their top mentalities
While a deal for Kovacic looks like it will be announced next week, the arrival of Gvardiol does not seem too far off as well, with personal terms having been reportedly agreed.
Now, Dean Jones has given an insight into why Manchester City have taken an interest in signing Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol in the first place.
“City’s move for two Croatians is obviously aimed at raising the levels of the team but more than that I’m told it is about maintaining the mindset of this squad. We’ve seen from Croatia teams over the years how they have an incredible mentality and belief and resistance on big stages and those traits are engrained in players like Kovacic and Gvardiol.”
Jones added, “Their technical strengths are clear and obvious, and to get the pair of them at just over £100m would be a steal.”
The intangibles that both could bring to the side are key
While Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol have all the quality in the world to play for Manchester City, their habit of turning up at the biggest stages, especially for Croatia at international tournaments prove that they do not shy away from the highest level.
Josko Gvardiol, who has also been brilliant for RB Leipzig in the Champions League was arguably one of, if not the best central defender at the World Cup as well.
While Mateo Kovacic had yet another underrated tournament, as he has been an ever-present figure in his national team’s success and played an especially huge role in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021.
The potential addition of the duo could power this City side on to try to win every trophy in their sight once again instead of resting on their laurels after their treble success.
