James Maddison has recommitted his future to Tottenham Hotspur on the same day he signed for the club 12 months ago.
Maddison, 27, joined Spurs from Leicester City on June 28 last year for £40 million. The attacking midfielder agreed a five-year contract with the club until 2028.
During an injury-affected first season, Maddison made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and assisting another nine. He missed 11 matches during three months out with an ankle injury, with his drop in form following that setback ultimately costing Maddison a place in the England squad for the European Championship.
He acknowledged that in a post earlier this month after being told the news. “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it,” Maddison shared in identical posts on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter. “Trained well and worked hard all week, but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set, which gave Gareth a decision to make.”
But three weeks on, Maddision has marked his first anniversary of becoming a Tottenham player on social media. The club’s official account posted a 30-second-long reel, captioned 12 months of Madders, which the player added to his story.
Maddison captioned the post: “1 year flew by. Can’t wait for the next 12 months,” punctuated by a white heart, the same as the club used in their caption. It is not the first time he has engaged with the club’s Instagram account this summer.
Last week, after the Premier League fixtures were released and revealed that Spurs would start the season away at Leicester, the club reshared footage from the 3-2 win at the King Power Stadium in January 2022. The club’s account captioned the post: “Run it back”. Maddison, who played and scored for the Foxes in that game, then commented: “No need admin.” They then lightheartedly apologized, replying: “Sorry xx”
